Rhine Experience 2012

THE SUMMER SCHOOL PROJECT 2012 RHINE EXPERIENCE

Social Media Marketing in the Higher Education / Non-Profit Sector

Jens Andreas Faulstich welcomed the students of this year's Maymester Program to Remagen. In an introductory session, Adelheid Korpp M.A. introduced the Coastal students and the German summer school participants about their study abroad and internship options at RheinAhrCampus Remagen.

Afterwards Karsten Kneese offered a workshop comparing attitudes and ideas concerning the use of social media for the marketing of German and US universities.

It was obvious that there were striking differences concerning user habits (the functions of social media activiely used by students and faculty) and legal backgrounds; different policies concerning privacy and data security were additional points brought up by the participants.

Working in mixed-nationality teams, the students also developed recommendations for the effective use of social media in academic contexts.

An excursion to Deutsche Welle enabled the students to familiarise themselves with the social media activities of one major state-owned broadcasting company with strong global activities and very heterogeneous target groups. Social activities like the Rheinlust Meeting and the Rheinauen BBQ helped to foster informal communication and personal contacts.

This module was part of an intensive study program for Part I of the International Summer School Program organised by Coastal Carolina University, HS Bonn-Rhein-Sieg and RheinAhrCampus Remagen.
