Laser & Optical Technologies are one of the few key technologies in which Germany is a global player in research and development as well as in the implementation of these results into innovative products. In many research fields of optical technologies, high-tech companies have developed into global market leaders. In Rhineland-Palatinate some of them are located in Mülheim-Kärlich, Koblenz, Kaiserslautern or Bad Kreuznach.
Optical technologies are among the first key technologies of the 21st century. With an estimated turnover of 155 billion Euros worldwide in 2015 - of which 25 billion Euros in Germany alone - and an estimated average growth of over 10% per year, the growth potential of this key technology is far from exhausted.
